Description:
With a background in Fine Art I discovered marquetry while studying cabinet-making and, having developed my own technique, a Crafts Council Setting-Up Grant in 2001 enabled me to set up my workshop. Since then I have been creating unique contemporary pieces, among them wall-based artworks and furniture with a marquetry surface.
Always cutting veneers by hand I let each design evolve while instinctively responding to a multitude of colours and grains. Combining conventional and ‘reconstructed’ veneers allows for bold and dramatic as well as subtle and sophisticated colour schemes which I employ in designs ranging from minimal to complex. Often exploring the dialogue between hard-edged geometry and organic pattern, I draw inspiration from architecture as well as music and am influenced by an underlying appreciation of early 20th Century Art. Precision and craftsmanship are central to my work and this is never compromised by the apparent spontaneity of my designs.
